Election for the Minnesota Public Employees Retirement Assocation Board of Trustees

MN PERA Elections 2010

 

Timeline & Tasks

January - March

  • Inform MSEA members of the election.
  • Attend Public Fund Trust candidate meeting.

April - June

  • Obtain and/or create list of eligible participants.
  • Create talking points and marketing materials for petition gathering.
  • Conduct a prep meeting for the regional coordinators and volunteers.
  • Research previous elections.
  • Trustee development for candidate - on going.

July - September

  • Attend work site, home visits, and member meetings.
  • Complete biography and candidate statement.
  • Start petition gathering efforts (once petitions are available).
  • Trustee development for candidate - on going.

October - December

  • October 7, 2010:  Last day MN PERA can receive nominating petitions.  This will determine if we do have election on hand.
  • Attend work site, home visits, and member meetings.
  • Trustee development for candidate - on going.

January, 2011

  • Attend work site, home visits, and member meetings.
  • January 10:  MN PERA will mail the ballots to the homes of eligible voters.
  • January 31, 2011:  Ballots are due.  Anything postmarked after that will NOT be accepted.
  • Trustee is sworn in to serve a four-year term.

  • Re-Elect Louise Olson, Retiree Representative, as a Board Member Who Will:
    • Keep "people" in mind when making "dollar decisions"
    • Speak up about employee contributions
    • Advocate for public policy that favors the employee / retiree
    • Be thoughtful and thorough in decision-making
    • Be accessible to all PERA members for questions
  • Anthony Newman (Business Agent and Custodian for the Minneapolis Public Schools) is running for the PERA Board At Large Rep

There are three at-large seats up for elections and at least two of the three incumbents are not running.

Next Steps:

  • Determine the amount budgeted for this campaign.
  • Determine if we are interested in pursuing a trustee seat on the PERA board
  • Gather the necessary intelligence to determine the possibility of winning the election.
  • Identify a candidate.
  • Research campaign finance rules.
  • Research
  • Conduct research on previous elections and what is our "WINNING" number
  • Find out when the petitions are available & who can sign them.
  • Create a more thorough campaign plan.
